The Experience

MogFest 2012 was scheduled for Calico, CA with the KOA in Calico being the base of operations.  We left San Diego in the rain and drove north on I-15 through intermittent rain showers.

The Photos

The photos below are what we saw.

Our trip north from San Diego had intermittent rain showers.  Above, a squally approaches us just south of Barstow, CA.

We arrived at the KOA in Calico, CA and got set-up.  Set-up in Thor is easy and fast.

Joe and his party had come in from Las Vegas and beat us to the camp.  Above, you can see his custom setup to handle both living quarters and provide haulage for his 404.

Joe's 404 has been heavily customized and has been modified to run using propane as the fuel.  The propane allows operation at high angles preventing stalling.

Terry drove from the central valley in his (new-to-him) 1300L Helgeth ambulance box.

Kevin and Kirsten stopped on their way back from a week in Sedona, AZ in their 1300L.

Joe's trailer tires suffered a large bubble en-route to the camp.

Eric recently purchased this clean DOKA from Dave in San Diego.  This DOKA is Altar-proven and came with us on one of our sand dune expeditions.

Terry's 1300 is in great shape and just completed a full factory rebuild process.

There were several Pinzgauers at the camp site including this clean 710.

Alan's son came in his trail-made K-5 Chevy Blazer.  Remember, the trail makes the truck.

I am not sure who owns this, but this is a nice tow vehicle.

Alan uses his FL-70 flatbed as his tow vehicle for both his 406 and his camp trailer.

Bill's VW Synchro is trail proven and has the scars to show for its efforts.  Sadly for Bill, his rig was limited to 2WD due to some mechanical issues and therefore stayed in camp.

There was a very nice 4-door soft top H-1 Hummer in camp.

Alan's 406 is unloaded and ready to go.

Eric's DOKA is getting loaded for the trail run.

One of the fellows had signage on his camp trailer.

As we headed to the trail head from the KOA, we passed a large dust plume on the nearby dry lake bed.

We headed right into the hills and got to 'wheeling.

Terry heads over the crest on the first big hill.

Eric let his son drive and he chose to see the sights from the bed of his DOKA.

Joe had a tire problem early in the trail so out come the tools to attack the problem.

Joe's spare is mounted on a pivoting frame.

We continued on into the mud hills.

The Calico area has plenty of interesting rock formations.

We followed a trail through the mud hills.

After the tire repair was completed Joe and the other 404 brought up the rear.

We paused for a short bio-break and to let the group reassemble.

Joe decided to show off and climb his buddy's tire.

Note the folding in the rock layers.  The Calico area has very interesting geologic features.

On one of the main trails we passed some folks that were camping with a nice FJ-40.  The balance of their group would arrive later in the day.

You know you have a sweet setup when you have custom neon lights for your bar.
