Plumbing at Buck Island Lake.
All the lakes in this area were created near the turn of the century by the
Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD). All the water is piped
downhill to meet the needs of metropolitan Sacramento, generating power
along the way. Here is the entrance to a tunnel that is several miles
long between Buck Island and Loon Lakes. There is a powerhouse at
Loon, but not here. The grating is the "trash rack" that
keeps big debris from entering the tunnel.
